Star Wars fans have had to endure a rocky journey over the years. With Electronic Arts being extremely hit or miss when it comes to Star Wars games, fans are excited to see what a new studio can bring to the table.
Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment is next up to take a crack at the Star Wars franchise with their upcoming game Star Wars Outlaws, and with the release date drawing ever close, here’s what we know about a game that is not so far, far away.
What is Star Wars Outlaws?
Open World, Sci-Fi Rebellion
Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world sci-fi adventure set between the events of the original Star Wars trilogy.
Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws is a third-person action game that has had Star Wars fans excited since it was first announced back in January 2021.
Set during the height of the rebellion, players will take advantage of the war as Vess, an outlaw looking to turn the galaxy’s misfortunes to their advantage.

The Star Wars Outlaws release date is August 30, 2024. The good news is, that not only do we have an official release date now, but we also have several trailers to help build excitement for the ever nearing release date.
If you can’t wait to jump in and see what Star Wars Outlaws has to offer, there’s some good news, players who pick up the Gold or Ultimate editions of Star Wars Outlaws, or those who are subscribed to Ubisoft+ can enjoy the game a few days early on August 27, 2024.
What Platforms Will Star Wars Outlaws Be Available On?
Confirmed Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For now, if you’re looking to play Star Wars Outlaws on PC, you will have to do so via Ubisoft’s own platform, Ubisoft Connect.
If you pick up a Ubisoft+ subscription, not only can you play Star Wars Outlaws a little earlier, but you can also save yourself some money, as the game comes included as part of the subscription service.
For any Xbox gamers out there wondering if they can play Star Wars Outlaws for free via the Game Pass, unfortunately, the game will not be included in the Game Pass subscription, or at least not at launch.
Star Wars Outlaws Trailers
Since we’re edging ever closer to the August release date, we’re now starting to see Ubisoft utilizing its huge marketing budget, releasing several trailers, including a Star Wars Outlaws gameplay trailer.
The first Star Wars Outlaws trailer to be released was the World Premiere Trailer from the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023.
While this particular trailer doesn’t offer any gameplay footage, it does however establish that the game is set between events from the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi movies.
It also shows us that Star Wars Outlaws won’t focus on the war itself, but instead, players will dive into the criminal underworld as Kay Vess, an emerging outlaw who is looking to start a new life.
The next important Star Wars Outlaws trailer was revealed at Ubisoft Forward, this time giving us an in-depth look at Star Wars Outlaws gameplay.
Thanks to the gameplay trailer, we now know that Star Wars Outlaws character Vess will use her alien companion, Nix, to distract guards, adding some stealth mechanics to the game.
As well as distracting guards, Nix will also be able to steal weapons from fallen enemies, as well as collect items while out exploring.
As well as having her own speeder, the trailer also shows us that Vess will also have her own ship, which can be used to go from planet to planet, as well as to engage in dogfights.
Why Fans Are Excited
Let’s be honest here: every time there’s a new Star Wars game, there’s always a new hope that the game is good, but the end result can be hit or miss.
But when it comes to Star Wars Outlaws, the change of developer to Massive Entertainment and publisher to Ubisoft promises to breathe some life into the Star Wars franchise.
As well as a new team working on the latest Star Wars game, we also get to steer away from the main characters, ignoring the main events of the movies for a focus on the criminal underworld, which promises an exciting new direction for Star Wars games.
Star Wars Outlaws also looks set to offer players more freedom to fly, drive, or walk their way around several planets, in what looks to be a huge open-world setting.
Is Star Wars Outlaws Multiplayer?
Sadly, Star Wars Outlaws will be a single-player experience only. No multiplayer or co-op mode has been announced.
Both Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft have confirmed that Star Wars Outlaws will be a single-player game, which makes it extremely unlikely that we will see any co-op or multiplayer patches launch in the future.

Star Wars Outlaws Controversy
You can’t release a game these days without a little controversy, and Star Wars Outlaws is no exception to that rule.
Many players have been outraged that the Jabba’s Gambit mission has been locked behind the Season Pass, meaning if you want to enjoy all of the game’s missions, you would need to splash out on one of the more expensive editions of the game.
However, Ubisoft has since released a statement claiming that all players will be able to enjoy each and every mission, regardless of which edition of Star Wars Outlaws they purchase.
The Bottom Line
Star Wars Outlaws promises to be an exciting, action-packed game where players will have total freedom to explore multiple planets.
While Star Wars games have been hit or miss in recent years, with a massive budget, new developers, and a new publisher, many gamers hope that this will be the game they have been waiting for.
With new trailers and screenshots flying out this summer and a release date drawing ever closer, thankfully, we won’t have to wait long before we find out if Massive Entertainment really was with the Force we needed when creating Star Wars Outlaws.
