Modular phones are not exactly new. Google, Motorola, and Essential Phone tried their hands at the ability to make smartphones more customizable a few years ago. Not long ago, Nothing sub-brand CMF also entered this space with the CMF Phone 1 offering the option to customize the look of the device at an affordable price point. Now, HMD is joining this bandwagon with its latest offering called HMD Fusion.

The HMD Fusion features six specialized Smart Pins located on the back of the device. These can be used to change the back panel covers serving specific use cases. HMD calls these “Outfits”. The Finnish brand is offering four interchangeable covers along with the ability to 3D print the user’s own design via the HMD Fusion Development Kit.

The outfits provided by HMD include the Flashy outfit, which features a built-in ring light for both the front and rear camera making it ideal for content creators. When not in use, it sits around the camera module. The Rugged outfit is IP68-certified dust and water-resistant ensuring durability. Another one is a wireless charging outfit. Users can also attach a controller to the phone.

The HMD Fusion features Gen 2 repairability which is similar to the HMD Skyline that was released in July this year. With access to iFixit, users can replace the smartphone’s screen, battery, and rear panel.

As for the core specifications, the HMD Fusion comes with a 6.56in HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It features a 108MP main camera paired with a 2MP depth lens along with EIS, night mode, RAW image processing, and more. The smartphone is equipped with a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 coupled with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. A 5,000mAh battery unit with support for 33W fast charging keeps the device running. The device runs on Android 14 OS with guaranteed two OS updates and three years of security patches.

The HMD Fusion starts at €249. The pricing of the outfits has not yet been revealed. However, they are said to be available in the fourth quarter of the year.
