Google announced Gemini Live, its alternative to ChatGPT’s voice mode, at its Made by Google event.
Gemini Live will be available in English starting today, August 13. Later this month, it will be available on Pixel, Samsung, and other Android phones.
Gemini Live: Key Features
Gemini Live will be available to Advanced subscribers, with ten voices included. A recent post on the official Google X account demonstrates several of them:
We’re introducing Gemini Live, a more natural way to interact with Gemini. You can now have a free-flowing conversation, and even interrupt or change topics just like you might on a regular phone call. Available to Gemini Advanced subscribers. #MadeByGoogle pic.twitter.com/eNjlNKubsv

Gemini Live, launching today, allows users to have dynamic conversations with the assistant, enabling brainstorming and real-time discussions. It can be used hands-free, allowing seamless conversations while on the move.
Currently available in English for Gemini Advanced subscribers on Android, the feature will soon expand to iOS and other languages. Users can also choose from 10 new voice options to personalize their experience.
Enhanced App Integration
Gemini integrates with Google apps, assisting with tasks without switching services. New extensions, including Keep, Tasks, Utilities, and expanded features on YouTube Music, enhance functionality. Upcoming features like the Calendar extension will allow users to manage events and set reminders using images.
Advanced Android Capabilities
Integrated deeply into Android, Gemini offers context-aware assistance across various apps. By pressing the power button or saying “Hey Google,” users can access help with what’s on their screens or get information from YouTube videos.
Gemini’s Android integration allows users to drag and drop images directly into apps like Gmail and Google Messages.
Project Astra
At the end of the Made by Google keynote speech, Google also mentioned that Project Astra is in its final stages and will soon come to Gemini Live.
Astra is a conversational, highly responsive take on Gemini that can serve both functional and creative tasks. It was initially presented in spring during the I/O conference.
Project Astra – @Google’s deepmind project coming soon to Gemini Live. Multi-modal, agentic, reasoning, planning, memory.
The AI assistant landscape is going to be competitive to say the least… ?? ?? ??
