Believe it or not, the Destiny saga has been going on for 10 years now across most gaming platforms. The story began on a subdued note when the game first launched, but each expansion has added more texture and detail to the lore.
Of course, there have been plenty of new guns, missions, and brutal raids to keep the loot hunters happy too in the meantime.
After so many years following the same story, Bungie is ready to wrap up the Light and Darkness saga with one final expansion: The Final Shape.
It comes after a rough reception to the previous expansion and a delay, so there is plenty of pressure on The Final Shape to give long-time fans a proper conclusion to the story they have invested in for a decade of their lives.
I’ll be your ghost and guide you through everything there is to know about The Final Shape so your Guardian can be ready to go on release day.
What is Destiny 2: The Final Shape?
The Final Shape is the newest expansion to Destiny 2. These expansions typically come out only once per year and make significant changes to gameplay, story, and lore. Each one adds a new campaign, location, raid, and tons of new loot, among other activities.
This expansion will bring Guardians to a location called the Pale Heart, which changes appearance based on whoever is there. This means we will be visiting altered versions of past locations from the entire Destiny saga.
Bungie has confirmed that even though The Final Shape is the last chapter in the Light and Darkness saga, it is not the end for Destiny. We don’t know what will come next for the series, but the studio does not intend for this to be the end of the franchise.
When is The Final Shape Coming Out?
Destiny 2: The Final Shape will be released on June 4, 2024. It was originally scheduled for February 27, however was delayed to fully realize its vision.
What Consoles/Platforms will Destiny 2: The Final Shape be Available for?
Destiny 2 hasn’t abandoned the last-generation consoles yet. You can play The Final Shape on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC when it launches.
Perhaps the next generation for Destiny will leave the previous consoles behind, but for now you will be able to play it anywhere you can already play Destiny 2.
The Final Shape Trailers
Our first hint at The Final Shape was a minute-long teaser from May 2023. It features fan-favorite Cayde-6 by a fire — despite, well… spoilers. It raises more questions than answers but was enough to drum up a lot of hype.
The Final Shape was revealed in August of 2023 with this brief trailer. It is all cinematics but sets up the idea that this will close all the loose ends of the series.
The last official trailer focuses on gameplay. This is where the community really got excited to see brand new powers that appear to break all the rules Destiny was built upon.
Why Fans Are Excited
Even though Destiny 2 has had more downs than ups for many players, it is undeniable that The Final Shape will be the biggest event since the game launched in 2014.
This has been a story, characters, and world that players have been invested in for a decade, so there’s a level of built-in excitement to know that it will all end here. The final chapter awaits.
That said, there’s also a decent amount of skepticism. This one expansion has a lot of narrative loose ends to tie up, and some question whether Bungie is up to the task.
From a gameplay perspective, new enemies, subclasses, and supers will shake up the gameplay more than any expansion before it. There’s also the special feeling of a new raid and the race to see which group will be the first to clear it.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape Price
~$50 for the Expansion
The Final Shape will cost you $50 just for the expansion, or you can bundle it with the annual pass for $100.
The Bottom Line
Destiny 2: The Final Shape is going to be an event one way or another. Bungie is putting all its chips on the table with this expansion to satisfy fans who have been with the series for a decade. That’s no easy feat.
Whether it succeeds or fails to deliver on the narrative front, it will paint the entire Destiny Light and Darkness saga as a success or failure.
Gameplay has never been a struggle for Bungie. Balance and amount of content are usually all there is to complain about, but everything shown so far for The Final Shape has the hardcore excited to play with all the new toys.
If you’ve had even a passing interest in Destiny 2, you won’t want to miss The Final Shape.
