While the majority of the Age of Empires games took a historical approach to the genre, Age of Mythology decided to focus on gods and mythology.

Although Age of Mythology: Retold is a remaster and technically not a new title, with one of the best games in the AoE series getting a full remake from the ground up, it’s an exciting release for both new and existing fans of the series.

Age of Mythology: Retold is a complete remake of the 2002 game Age of Mythology, originally developed by Relic Entertainment.

It was the third game in the Age of Empires series and was considered to be one of the best, thanks to the game-breaking away from the traditional historical theme.

Age of Mythology: Retold is an RTS game where players can call upon mythical creatures and even gods to help them defend their towns or raze their enemies to the ground.

When Does Age of Mythology: Retold Come Out?

Release Date: September 4, 2024
Early Access for Premium Edition: August 28, 2024

The Age of Mythology: Retold release date is September 4, 2024. This will include both console and PC versions of the game, meaning no matter how you prefer to play, you will get to enjoy Age of Mythology: Retold from the very beginning of fall 2024.

However, if you choose to purchase Age of Mythology: Retold Premium Edition, you will be able to play the game on August 28, 2024, a full week before the game officially launches.

There have also been a few scheduled closed beta tests for Age of Mythology: Retold, so if you’re keen to jump into the game even earlier, make sure to head on over to the Age of Empires website and keep an eye out for any news about future tests.

It’s worth noting, though, that beta tests can often be riddled with bugs and issues. They exist to help developers find and fix issues, so don’t expect it to be smooth sailing if you do manage to get an invite.

Age of Mythology: Retold: Platforms & Consoles

PC & Xbox Series X|S

Age of Mythology: Retold will be available on both Xbox Series X|S and PC.

PC gamers can choose to play Age of Mythology: Retold via the Xbox app on their PCs. Otherwise, they can purchase the game on Steam.

Age of Mythology: Retold is now the second game in the Age of Empires series to make it to console. However, it’s the first game in the series to get a straight-to-console release.

Age of Empires 4 is also currently available on Xbox Series X|S. However, it wasn’t until Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition was released that Xbox players were able to enjoy the game.

With the game being published by Xbox Game Studios, there’s currently no news on a PS5 version, and it seems highly unlikely Age of Mythology: Retold will ever appear on a rival Sony console.

Will Age of Mythology: Retold Be On Game Pass?

As Age of Empires is a Microsoft IP, it has already been confirmed that the game will be coming straight to the Xbox subscription service, Game Pass.

Not only can you pick up Age of Mythology: Retold for free as part of your Game Pass subscription, but if you’re keen to jump in as quickly as possible, you can already pre-install the game ready for its release in September.

Of course, as is almost always the case with Game Pass games, the version included in the Game Pass is the Standard Edition. If you want to play with the additional extras, you will need to purchase the digital upgrade.

Why Are Fans Excited?

Over the years, the Age of Empires series followed the same format. The game would be based on one or more real-life wartime scenarios and would be set around a certain time in human history.

Age of Mythology broke the mold, moving away from the tried-and-tested formula the game had become known for and instead focusing on creatures, gods, and myths.

While this was a risk, it was one that paid off, as Age of Mythology is now widely considered one of the most popular entries in the series, with many gamers stating that they had been waiting for almost two decades for this day to finally come.

Age of Mythology: Retold: Trailers

We first got a look at Age of Mythology: Retold last year, thanks to the Age of Empires announcement trailer. While I was personally super excited to see the trailer, it didn’t offer much in the way of revealing what had been changed, and how it had been upgraded.

Thankfully, just last month at Xbox Games Showcase 2024, we finally got a more in-depth view of Age of Mythology: Retold, including some actual gameplay footage showcasing the game and its visual improvements.

The trailer showed us a glimpse of what’s to come and announced that the game would be dropped on launch to Game Pass.

Standard Edition – $29.99
Premium Edition – $49.99

As we’ve all come to expect from games these days, there are multiple editions to choose from.

Age of Mythology: Retold’s Price depends on which of these editions you choose. Or, if you want to save some money and own an Xbox Series X|S, you can play the standard edition for free with an Xbox Game Pass subscription. If you don’t own an Xbox, you can play for free with Game Pass for PC.

While it is a steep jump from the $29.99 for the standard edition up to $49.99 for the premium edition, the inclusion of a new god, as well as two expansions to enjoy, makes it a pretty sweet deal.

The Bottom Line

Age of Mythology: Retold might be a remaster, as opposed to a whole new game, but it’s a remaster of one of the most popular games in the series’ long history.

Players will experience one of their favorite RTS games with a huge graphical overhaul. They will also get to use a new god and have two exciting new expansions to look forward to in 2024 and 2025.
