- Odds: BetOnline consistently offers leading odds on all sports betting markets. This makes it one of the best options for seasoned bettors looking to maximize their returns on bets. The odds are also released pretty early meaning that you could get great value ahead of any major event news.
- Sports: There are more than 30 sports categories to choose from with all major leagues and a few niche sports to pick from. There are even markets for politics and esports leagues and tournaments.
- Promotions: You’ll find lots of chances to add grab some extra value at BetOnline. This includes promotions for depositing cash and even special offers on player props and specific events.
- Banking: BetOnline covers all the bases with traditional card and online banking options. The best method though is through crypto. You get instant deposits and payouts when using one of the supported major tokens.
Pros
- Lots of markets for major and niche events
- Earliest and most competitive betting odds
- Full racebook and poker/casino platform
- Instant payouts possible via crypto
Cons
- Interface could do with a refresh
- Fees for credit card payments
Our Verdict: 9.9/10
BetOnline stands out as one of the best North Carolina online sports betting and gambling sites. It’s got great odds, lots of markets, and a catalog of more than 1,000 games to choose from.
Crypto payouts are super fast but those fees on credit cards aren’t ideal. Aside from this minor drawback, there’s very little else we can find fault with at BetOnline.
2. BetWhale – Best North Carolina Sports Betting Site for Live Betting
- Payout time: Instant to 3 days
- License: Curacao Gaming Authority
- Markets: 25+
- Online Casino: Yes
- Odds: BetWhale is the closest contender to BetOnline when it comes to early betting lines and competitive odds. The live betting lines are also updated super fast making it ideal for in-game betting markets.
- Sports: There are more than 25 sports categories to choose from which is slightly less than some competitors but still pretty good. There are novelty markets too but no betting on politics.
- Promotions: BetWhale has plenty of regular promotions including deposit match bonuses and daily 50% boosts. For new signups, you can get an unlimited crypto deposit match bonus which is something you won’t find anywhere else.
- Banking: You can make payments with cards or even bank transfer while there’s also support for cryptocurrencies. Crypto options offer instant payouts much like all the other NC online gambling sites on this list.
Pros
- Regular high-value bonuses
- Lots of crypto offers and promos
- Super fast withdrawals
- Very early odds
Cons
- No loyalty program
Our Verdict: 9.8/10
BetWhale only launched in 2023 but it has already become a firm favorite in the North Carolina online gambling industry. This is down to the competitive odds and great bonuses as well as the 1,200+ games available in the casino.
To top all that off, BetWhale has a user-friendly design that makes it great for first-time bettors.
3. TG.Casino – Best NC Online Gambling Site for Crypto
- Payout time: Instant to 12 hours
- License: Curacao Gaming Authority
- Markets: 45+
- Online Casino: Yes
- Odds: Odds at TG.Casino are easily as good and, in some cases, better than competitors. This might surprise you given that this sites started out as a casino platform in 2023.
- Sports: TG.Casino really impresses in this area with more than 45 sports categories and a full racebook with greyhound racing included. There’s even a dedicated esports betting section with 20+ leagues and tournaments to bet on.
- Promotions: If we have one complaint about this NC sportsbook, it’s that there are very few promotions. There are some contests for major sports and free prediction games but no deposit bonuses aside from the welcome offer.
- Banking: TG.Casino supports crypto payments only with support for 20+ coins including its own native token. You can buy crypto through the site using a card. Payouts are instantly processed which is quite a bonus.
Pros
- Instant payouts via crypto
- Best range of sports and markets
- Also available through Telegram
- Excellent odds for all sports
Cons
- Very few promos
Our Verdict: 9.7/10
TG.Casino is definitely the best NC online gambling sites for crypto with all those coins supported. But it’s also the best for sports coverage with all those markets and even esports betting covered. And when it comes to casino games, you have 5,000+ to choose from.
Add a few more promos and TG.Casino would certainly give BetOnline a run for its money as the best North Carolina sportsbook.
Is Online Gambling Legal in North Carolina?
As with many US states, the answer is both yes and no. In 2023, HB347 was signed into law, allowing the state to license online sportsbooks. These platforms launched in March 2024. But, the bill did not include any provisions allowing the state to license online casinos or poker rooms.
Offshore gambling sites are not bound by state rules and continue to accept players from NC. These platforms are based outside of the US and licensed by reputable jurisdictions, such as Curacao or Panama.
No player has ever been prosecuted in the US for joining or using any of these offshore gambling sites.

👤 Who can play: | State-licensed – 21+, in-state Offshore – 18+ |
🎰 Online Gambling Available: | State-licensed – sports betting, horse racing, lotteries Offshore – sports betting, casino, horse racing |
NC Sports Betting Sites
North Carolina online sportsbooks became legal in 2023, with the passing of HB 347. Eight NC sportsbooks then launched in March 2024. But even before that launch date offshore online sportsbooks have welcomed bettors in the Tar Heel State.
Horse Gambling Sites
In May 2023, the Senate took the NC gambling bill and added online horse racing. As a result, horse gambling sites also became legal in the state when the bill was passed. But as with NC sports betting, online racebooks have always been available through offshore sites.
Esports Gambling Sites
NC sportsbooks based offshore mostly cover esports, offering markets for popular games like League of Legends, DOTA 2, and CS:GO gambling. The main events often have thousands of viewers and some fans enjoy placing bets online to back their favorites. BetOnline and TG.Casino are two of the best options for esports betting markets.
Casino Gambling Sites
NC Online casinos are only available through offshore sites. These provide hundreds of gaming options for real money. Sweepstakes and social gambling sites are legal in North Carolina as well. So there’s no shortage of games, such as slots, blackjack, roulette, keno, and bingo.
DFS Gambling Sites
Daily Fantasy Sports gambling sites in North Carolina aren’t covered by current gambling legislation. So, while the new laws don’t include DFS gambling, they also don’t outlaw such contests either. This means that the leading DFS platforms are active in the state.
Poker Gambling Sites
Online poker in North Carolina is only available through offshore sites, like BetOnline, Bovada, and Everygame. These are on nationwide networks, so the traffic is great, especially for low-mid stakes at the Texas Hold’em tables. We also found good numbers for Omaha and the tournaments tend to have lots of action.
Lottery Gambling Sites
The NC Lottery was established in 2005 and now has more than 7,000 retail stores throughout the state and is the only operator that accepts online purchases for seven lotteries in North Carolina. None of our recommended sites sell lottery tickets, but some offer lottery-style games, such as keno, bingo, and scratch cards.
Politics Gambling Sites
Gambling on politics is an option that you can find at some offshore gambling sites. Operators generally have markets for the big political events, including the Presidential elections.
North Carolina Online Gambling Bonuses
One of the perks to gambling online in North Carolina is access to various bonuses and promotions. These can help increase your available bankroll and help you win more. Here are some of the most popular.
Welcome Bonuses
Offered to new players after signing up, welcome bonuses usually provide the biggest boost. Some offers require a first deposit to fully take advantage of the rewards.
Deposit Match Bonuses
A percentage match on a deposit, ranging from 30% to 300%, that adds extra bonus funds in the account. Deposit match bonuses can be available as part of the welcome offer or as following promotions.
Ongoing Promotions
Various offers and rewards available for registered players. Depending on the gambling site, the promos can consist of reload bonuses, bonus credits, insurances, boosted payouts, and more.
Bonus Bets
Extra gambling credits that can be used on selected markets without having to spend any real cash. The payouts from bonus bets don’t normally include the initial stake and may come with additional rollover requirements.
Loyalty Bonuses
Online gambling sites can have loyalty programs in place where players earn points simply for gambling. These points can then determine the loyalty level and the available bonuses that come with it.
Odds Boosts
North Carolina betting apps and sites will offer odds boosts on a variety of markets. These tend to be offered on a daily or weekly basis and are always specific to an event, market, or wager type.
Parlay Insurance
A bonus that earns you a refund if one of the legs of your parlay wager lets you down. It’s usually paid in site credits, which need to be played through before withdrawing.

North Carolina Sweepstakes Casinos
US sweepstakes casinos can provide a real online gaming experience for players looking for something a bit different. With sweepstakes sites, players can access hundreds of slots and other casino games.
The main difference is that you will have to use the available virtual currencies instead of real money. While Gold Coins are for playing for free, Sweeps Coins can be used to redeem cash prizes.
North Carolina Gambling Apps & Mobile Sites
North Carolina betting apps and mobile sites allow you to play your favorite games and access sports markets from anywhere.
While state-licensed sites offer mobile apps, the offshore sites that we recommend all have mobile websites. These work seamlessly on any mobile device and are every bit as fast if not faster than mobile apps.
North Carolina Gambling Compared to Neighboring States
The gambling regulations in the region are not that much different from what we’ve seen in North Carolina.
If we look to the north, Virginia online gambling is the most impressive out of the neighboring states, with more than a dozen betting sites in a market that first launched in January 2021. It also has offshore options that even include real money online casino gambling sites.
Tennessee online gambling is pretty much the same, with 12 active sports betting operators and no casino sites licensed in the state. There are also no retail gambling establishments in Tennessee and no plans to open retail betting shops. Again, offshore gambling is easily accessible in TN.
South Carolina gambling is more restrictive, with no regulations that would allow the state to license online sites. This is also the case in Georgia after multiple bills failed to legalize online gambling.
Land-Based Casinos and Sportsbooks in NC
There are three casinos in the Old North State, all of which are operated by Native Indian tribes. These offer casino games and also have their own retail sportsbooks.
Harrah’s Cherokee Hotel and Casino
- Address: 777 Casino Drive, Cherokee, NC 28719
- Opening hours: 24/7
Harrah’s Cherokee Hotel and Casino is a gaming establishment owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, located in the western part of North Carolina.
There are more than 3,000 slot machines and 160 table games over the 150,000 square feet of casino gambling space, with access to the Caesars Rewards program.
Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel
- Address: 777 Casino Parkway, Murphy, NC 28906
- Opening hours: 24/7
Also operated by Harrah’s and with access to Caesars events and rewards, the Cherokee Valley River Casino Resort is smaller but with plenty of gambling options.
It has more than 1,000 slots and 60 table games. There are several restaurants available, as well as a full Caesars retail sportsbook with a 32-foot HD screen and betting kiosks.
Two Kings Casino
- Address: 538 Kings Mountain Blvd., Kings Mountain, NC 28086
- Opening hours: 24/7
Two Kings Casino is owned by the Catawba Nation, which is the only federally-recognized tribe in South Carolina.
While the facility is meant to be temporary, it offers 24/7 gambling with 1,000 slot machines and tens of electronic table games for blackjack, roulette, craps, and baccarat.
Tax on North Carolina Gambling Winnings
Gambling winnings from licensed sites count as taxable income, which means that players must pay a flat tax rate of 5.25% in North Carolina.
On top of this, there is a federal income tax of 24% that applies to gambling winnings beyond a certain point, usually around $1,200 for slot machines. Most regulated operators will withhold the federal tax amount and file a form with the IRS on the player’s behalf.
Offshore North Carolina gambling sites are a little different. They do not withhold taxes or report your winnings to the IRS. That’s your responsibility.
Responsible Gambling in North Carolina
The state government provides responsible gambling resources through the North Carolina State Lottery Commission’s website. This includes a gambling helpline and a voluntary self-exclusion program.
NC online gambling sites also provide responsible gambling tools and resources. These tools allow you to place limits on your account or to take a break from gambling in NC.
Best North Carolina Sports Betting and Gambling Sites – Key Takeaways
There are lots of platforms to choose from in the North Carolina sports betting market, all of which have their own merits. But before you make that final choice, here are some takeaways from our research into online gambling in NC.
Casino games only available offshore
While sportsbooks are legal in the state, online casinos can only be accessed via offshore sites like those recommended in this guide. That may change in the future but we won’t hold our breath.
More competitive odds at offshore NC Sportsbooks
offshore North Carolina sports betting sites often have better odds and offers. This is because costs are lower as there are no state taxes to pay. The sportsbooks then pass those savings onto you through better odds.
