Best Michigan Online Sports Betting Sites

Most of the best online sport betting sites provide great betting options, secure banking, generous bonuses, and other perks. However, there are plenty of aspects that differentiate them. We will go through the top Michigan options in more detail so that you can quickly find the perfect fit.

1. BetOnline – Best Overall MI sportsbook

Michigan sports betting

  • Payout time: 1-2 days
  • Established: 2012
  • License: Panama Gaming Commission
  • Restricted Regions: New Jersey

Our Verdict (9.9/10)

BetOnline has been one of the top online gambling brands in the US for over a decade. Michigan bettors benefit from odds with very low margins which means you’ll generally get better value for your dollar betting at BetOnline over other bookmakers.

Odds are released early too – so you can take advantage before the odds shift once everyone else gets in on the action. You’ll also find several betting features such as some live streaming and a handy bet builder for creating the perfect parlay.

The platform hasn’t changed much over the years. This is probably because the site runs smoothly on desktop and mobile, albeit the mobile sports betting page can feel a little constricted at times. The cashier has a mixture of crypto and traditional options, although you can’t withdraw using debit or credit cards still.

Features Overview:

  • Betting Options: 9.6/10
  • Betting Odds: 9.9/10
  • Streaming & Features: 9.1/10
  • Promotions & Rewards: 9.5/10
  • User Experience: 9.3/10
  • Payment Methods: 9.4/10
  • Customer Support: 9.6/10

Pros pros

  • Low margin odds across the board
  • Covers more than 35 sports
  • Odds are released before other sportsbooks

Cons cons

  • No credit or debit card payouts

2. BetUS  – High Betting Limits

Michigan Sports betting

  • Payout time: 0-3 days
  • Established: 1994
  • License: Government of Mwali
  • Headquarters: Costa Rica

Our Verdict (9.5/10)

Serious sports bettors have long rallied behind BetUS owing to strong odds, quite early release of odds for major US leagues, and very high betting limits – ideal for sharp bettors and high rollers. The coverage of events and markets is just as good as BetOnline but the racebook leans a little more towards US racing than it does overseas.

This platform runs very well on mobile devices and the layout never feels cluttered like some other major competitors. There is a unique feature called BetUS TV which offers a plethora of in-depth video analysis and predictions of a wide variety of sports.

The bonuses can get pretty big at BetUS and, for those thinking about online casinos in Michigan, the welcome bonus also includes a small amount of bonus money to be used for gaming.

Features Overview:

  • Betting Options: 9.6/10
  • Betting Odds: 9.4/10
  • Streaming & Features: 6/10
  • Promotions & Rewards: 9.3/10
  • User Experience: 9.5/10
  • Payment Methods: 8/8/10
  • Customer Support: 9.3/10

Pros pros

  • High betting limits and extensive markets
  • Great racebook for local US racing
  • BetUS TV platform provides betting insights
  • Bonuses are often quite large

Cons cons

  • No card withdrawals

125% Sign-Up Bonus:100% up to $2,000 on sport and 25% on Casino

125% Sign-Up Bonus:100% up to $2,000 on sport and 25% on Casino

3. MyBookie – Offers Low Bonus Rollovers

Michigan sports betting

  • Payout time: 2-3 days
  • Established: 2014
  • License: Gaming Curacao
  • Headquarters: Costa Rica

Our Verdict (9.4/10)

This sportsbook is very user-friendly and very friendly for casual sports bettors. The odds are very accessible but not exactly the sharpest when compared to BetOnline, BetUS, or SportsBetting.ag. MyBookie does have a reputation for banning professional gamblers – so be aware if you are a pro looking to regularly take advantage of long odds.

We noted at least 25 different sports to bet on and MyBookie covers a lot of the “novelty” markets such as politics, professional wrestling, and entertainment – like the Oscars and MTV Awards. Live betting is fast and feels very comfortable on a mobile device.

You can deposit using a good range of popular cryptocurrencies and traditional means. However, you can only withdraw using cryptos and wire transfers. There are several ongoing Michigan sports betting bonuses for bettors and the rollovers are advantageously low.

Features Overview:

  • Betting Options: 9.4/10
  • Betting Odds: 9.210
  • Streaming & Features: 6/10
  • Promotions & Rewards: 9.4/10
  • User Experience: 9.6/10
  • Payment Methods: 8.9/10
  • Customer Support: 9.3/10

Pros pros

  • Fairly competitive odds that suit casual bettors
  • Wide market coverage of niche and novelty events
  • Ongoing bonuses feature very low rollovers

Cons cons

  • Limited withdrawal options

100% up to $1,000 + $10 Casino Chip

100% up to $1,000 + $10 Casino Chip

  • Reload bonuses available for all deposits
  • News section with expert views and predictions

4. Sportsbetting.ag – Low-Margin Odds

Michigan sports betting

  • Payout time: 1-2 days
  • Established: 1999
  • License: Panama Gaming Commission
  • Headquarters: Panama City, Panama

Our Verdict (9.4/10)

Initially launched way back in 1999, Sportsbetting.ag was eventually acquired by the BetOnline group and the platform was quickly turned into a sister site of sorts. You can enjoy the same great low-margin odds as BetOnline, as well as the same variety in markets and event coverage.

The bonuses are different though. An important consideration is the fact that most matched deposit offers are provided as “free play” which restricts your bets to specific sports and markets. Unlike BetOnline where you can mostly bet on whatever you wish with your bonus.

You’ll also have the same deposit and withdrawal methods which includes fast cryptocurrencies with high maximum withdrawals. Debit and credit cards are still limited to deposits only.

Features Overview:

  • Betting Options: 9.6/10
  • Betting Odds: 9.4/10
  • Streaming & Features: 6/10
  • Promotions & Rewards: 8.7/10
  • User Experience: 9.4/10
  • Payment Methods: 9.0/10
  • Customer Support: 9.3/10

Pros pros

  • Great low-margin odds that are released early
  • Regular ongoing sports betting bonuses
  • Backed by the BetOnline group

Cons cons

  • No debit and credit card withdrawals
  • Bonuses are offered as “free play”

100% Welcome Bonus up to $500 x 2

100% Welcome Bonus up to $500 x 2

  • Weekly betting and pick'em contests
  • Excellent multi-view feature for live betting

5. Lucky Block – Wide Selection of Crypto Options

Michigan sports betting

  • Payout time: 0-2 days
  • Established: 2022
  • License: Curacao Interactive Licensing
  • Headquarters: London, UK

Our Verdict (9.2/10)

Lucky Block initially launched in 2022 and quickly became one of the most popular cryptocurrency-only gambling sites in the US. The platform also has a fast registration policy which means you can create an account with ease.

This platform’s sports betting continues to grow but there still isn’t any horse racing and the smaller niche and novelty events have fewer markets than the likes of MyBookie or XBet. You can also only use cryptocurrencies at Lucky Block – although you can buy crypto with a credit card. Withdrawals can only be made to a crypto wallet.

Features Overview:

  • Betting Options: 9.4/10
  • Betting Odds: 9.0/10
  • Streaming & Features: 7/10
  • Promotions & Rewards: 8.4/10
  • User Experience: 9.3/10
  • Payment Methods: 9.0/10
  • Customer Support: 8.7/10

Pros pros

  • Instant cryptocurrency withdrawal times
  • Browse a good selection of sports and markets
  • Access the site from a mobile device to bet
  • You can still buy crypto using a credit card

Cons cons

  • Only accepts cryptocurrencies

200% welcome bonus up to $25,000 + 50 Free Spins

200% welcome bonus up to $25,000 + 50 Free Spins

  • VIP welcome bonus and loyalty points system

Is Sports Betting Legal in Michigan?

There is a long history of support for gambling in the Great Lakes State. In 1972, voters supported a referendum to allow a state lottery and charitable gaming by a 72%/28% margin.

Michigan lawmakers tried to pass a sports betting law before the US Supreme Court overturned PASPA, the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, in 2017. Outgoing Governor Rick Snyder vetoed it, citing concerns over the lack of scrutiny in the legislation and indicating that the next legislature should “thoroughly evaluate the revenue implications of authorizing internet gambling.”

Incoming Gov Whitmer had no such qualms about the legislation and signed HB 4917 into law after its passage by the Michigan Legislature in December 2019. The legislation allowed retail sports betting to launch within three months and online sports betting to go live in January 2021. 14 Michigan sports betting apps launched statewide, with 15 MI online sportsbook licenses available.

Timeline for Sports Betting in Michigan

  • January 22, 2021: The first online sportsbooks in MI launch. Nine Michigan sports betting apps go live in the state, including BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel.
  • March 11, 2020: Michigan’s first retail sportsbooks open. The BetMGM Sportsbook at the MGM Grand and the Barstool Sportsbook at Greektown Casino Hotel take the state’s first bets.
  • December 31, 2019: Governor Gretchen Whitmer signs HB 4917, paving the way for legal sports betting in Michigan. Under the legislation, casinos can apply for sports betting licenses.
  • April 9, 2019: Representative Matt Hall introduces HB 4917, or the Lawful Sports Betting Act, to the Michigan House.
  • April 25, 2018: Representative Brandt Iden introduces HB 4926, HB 4927, and HB 4928, all collectively proposing the legalization of sports betting in MI.

Who Can Place Sports Bets in Michigan?

You must be aged 21 or over and located within state lines to place wagers at state-licensed online sportsbooks Michigan.

There are a few groups that are restricted from betting. These include coaches and players, referees, league and team officials, employees of betting operators, and anyone with access to confidential information about sports.

Offshore Michigan sportsbooks are a little different in that they don’t need to follow state guidelines. This means that they will allow you  to place wagers once you are 18 and there are no restrictions on where you are located.

Future of Michigan Sports Betting

As a mature sports betting industry has grown in MI, all but one Michigan sportsbook license has been claimed. Speculation has grown that lawmakers might pass legislation increasing the number of available licenses, but this seems to be a distant prospect.

Progress in other gambling areas, like the January 2023 launch of interstate online poker, has taken priority with legislators.

Legislation to include greater responsible gambling resources may be a development in the future for MI sports betting. In February 2023, State Senator Joseph N. Bellino Jr. proposed SB 54, which would see responsible gambling taught in Michigan schools.

Off-Track and Stadium Betting Locations

There are no stadium or off-track betting facilities in Michigan, despite partnerships between the state’s major league teams and sportsbooks. You may see sportsbook branding around stadiums, but no wagers are accepted on-site.

Several Michigan sportsbooks have opened sports bars giving you a chance to place wagers on your phone. There are no betting kiosks at these sites.

There is only one horse racetrack in the Great Lakes State, Northville Downs. While you can place off-track pari-mutuel wagers at several racebooks MI has no off-track betting locations. This means that wagering at Northville Downs or through offshore betting apps are your only options for betting on horse racing.

Michigan Responsible Gambling Resources

Like many states, Michigan has a state-wide self-exclusion program that prevents self-excluded players from registering or gambling at any casino licensed by the MGCB. You can voluntarily join the program for either five years or life. At the end of your self-exclusion period, you can change your status. Every Michigan online sports betting site must offer this to bettors following MGCB regulations.

Michigan sportsbooks will also direct you to third-party organizations like the Michigan Association on Problem Gambling, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, and the National Council on Problem Gambling. A proportion of sports betting tax revenue in MI is directed toward helping problem gamblers.

How Does Michigan Compare to Other States?

Market Coverage

With plenty of Michigan online sports betting sites available, MI bettors have a great selection of markets. There are also few restrictive sports betting laws, so nearly all professional and collegiate sports are available for betting.

No restrictions on in-state college teams or college prop betting exist, so bettors are free to wager on popular college teams like Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.

An 8.4% tax is applied to gross gaming revenue from sports betting, and each sportsbook must pay 0.25% of its betting handle in excise taxes. There is also a $50 tax on every employee involved with taking wagers.

MI collected $24,660,065 in state betting taxes between the legalization of sports betting in March 2020 and January 2023. Most of this money is allocated to the Michigan School Aid Fund, which covers foundation allowance, special education, at-risk programs, school meals, and vocational education, among other education programs. The revenue also funds aid for state firefighters with cancer and a state fund through the Department of Health and Human Services for problem gamblers.

Betting Taxes

Gambling winnings are considered taxable income under the Michigan Income Tax Act. As MI has a flat income tax system, all income earners pay 4.25% of taxable income. Unlike in some other states, losses are not deductible.

In addition to state taxes, sports betting taxes are taken at the federal level, so you must declare any profit on your IRS tax form W-2G. Some sportsbooks will withhold 25% of your winnings for tax purposes. Any profit over $600 is subject to tax, and your sportsbook will send you the relevant documents if you pass this threshold.

Who Oversees Sports Betting in Michigan?

The MCGB is made up of permanent executive staff and board members. The Governor of Michigan appoints board members to represent the public interest and ensure a fair process. Executive staff members have permanent positions within the organization.
