Google Play is a Web service portal created by Google and launched in March 2012. Originally, introduced in 2008 as the Android Market, Google Play consolidates the search giant’s app market and movie, video, music and e-book offerings, allowing users to download, play and use games, apps, music, movies and books from a central location.

Google Play’s services are similar to Apple’s iTunes and iCloud. It can be thought of as Google’s answer to rival Apple’s rising dominance in the personal cloud service market.

  • It’s social media friendly. Users may use Google Plus (Google+) to share content, including movies, music, books, mobile games and apps.
