What Does Open-Source Virtual Private Network Mean?

An open-source virtual private area network (OpenVPN) is a free, open-source software application that implements virtual private network techniques to create secure point-to-point connections in remote access facilities or bridged configurations.

Techopedia Explains Open-Source Virtual Private Network

OpenVPN uses secure socket layer/transport layer security (SSL/TLS) features to ensure encryption and allow data to traverse network address translators and firewalls. OpenVPN provides authentication mechanism among close participants by means of certificates, pre-shared secret keys and login parameters like user name and password. These VPNs allows the server to release authentication certificates for clients using signature and certificate authority in multi-client server configurations.
