Techopedia Explains Gantt Chart

A Gantt chart makes it simple to create, view and monitor project activities and tasks over a given time. Typically, each activity, process or task in a Gantt chart is represented by a horizontal bar scaled parallel to a calendar and/or dates. The start and end of each bar represent the start and the end of that particular activity. Gantt charts help in quickly understanding the different tasks in a project, their schedule (start and end date) and any overlapping tasks or activities.

Gantt charts are commonly used in software project management activities and are frequently created and managed through project management software.
